San Diego is a great city, known for its beautiful coastline, vibrant culture, and supportive community. Many people in recovery will discuss how it’s a great place to get sober. There are many 12-step groups and many great things about the city. One important thing for many people in recovery is its robust public transportation system, walkable neighborhoods, and dedicated bike lanes.
Living without a car is often necessary for people new to recovery, and there are some great reasons why.
Getting To and From 12-Step Meetings
Many people new to recovery don’t have a lot of money. They may not have a driver’s license, street-legal vehicle, or the ability to get insurance for their vehicle. Some people will get sober while on probation or after a license suspension, so transportation must be accessible.
San Diego’s public transportation network makes it easier for people to get to their AA meetings. Public transit also eliminates the stress of driving. Many people deal with anxiety when they first get sober, but driving doesn’t have to be the cause of it.
Walkability and Exploring San Diego on Foot
San Diego is known for walkable neighborhoods such as Hillcrest, North Park, and Little Italy. These neighborhoods are all pedestrian-friendly, with wide sidewalks, parks, and many fun places to stop by on the way, such as coffeehouses.
Walking has many health benefits. It’s good for your mental and physical health, helping boost endorphins and mood while lowering blood pressure. It can help people control their weight, get more sunshine, and connect with the outside world.
Bicycling — or Scootering — Around Town
In recent years, San Diego has become quite bike-friendly, with an expanding network of dedicated bike lanes. Several biking organizations exist, like the Bike Coalition of San Diego County, which provides a map of bike paths to explore.
Cycling is a fantastic way for people in recovery from addiction to get active and get around.
If you’re not into bikes, or you’re tired and have had a long day, there are also plenty of electric bikes and scooters available as rideshares.
Connecting with Nature
Cycling is a great way to explore San Diego’s beauty. Not sure where to go? Take a ride along the waterfront, through Balboa Park, or on the scenic paths of Mission Bay. Connecting with nature can be grounding and help people nurture their spiritual side.
Being able to bike to these gatherings also helps people new to recovery remain independent.
Building a Support Network
No matter your mode of transportation, if you plan on moving to San Diego, you’ll find other people in recovery who live nearby and go to the same meetings.
Some sober living homes offer transportation to meetings, doctor’s appointments, and other places their clients need to get to.
Many people in recovery also find that their sponsor and peers at 12-step meetings are happy to meet up before or after the meeting and take the same type of transportation. Lots of people bike together to meetings or take a bus together.
Joining local biking groups or participating in organized rides can help people expand their social networks, creating new friendships and connections with people who live healthy lifestyles.
San Diego is a Robust Community
San Diego’s public transportation, walkable neighborhoods, and bike-friendly environment can help create a positive environment for change.
Many people in the area share the goal of getting healthier in body, mind, and spirit. Using public transit and embracing walking and biking can help people new to the area and, in recovery, create a robust support network while enjoying the beauty of San Diego.
Life is easier when transportation isn’t an issue. Luckily, our area has many transportation options.
